The math that drains tourist budgets daily

ZVV single tickets in Zürich are a trap that catches nearly every tourist. A single ride within the city center (Zone 110, which counts as TWO zones) costs CHF 4.60. Four typical sightseeing trips—hotel to Old Town, Old Town to lake, lake to museum, museum back—total CHF 18.40 in single tickets.

Here’s the kicker: a 24-hour pass for 1-2 zones costs CHF 9.20—identical to just two single tickets but providing unlimited travel. The break-even point is exactly 2 trips. The 9 O’Clock Day Pass covers ALL 45 ZVV zones for just CHF 27 (valid from 9 AM weekdays, all day weekends)—nearly 50% cheaper than the regular all-zone day pass.

WHY AVOID single tickets: The zone system confuses everyone (Zone 110 counts double!), tickets expire after just 1-2 hours, and fines for invalid tickets start at CHF 100. Unlike Basel, Geneva, and Bern, Zurich doesn’t offer free transport cards from hotels. PRICE RANGE: CHF 4.60 per ride vs CHF 9.20 for unlimited daily travel.

Better alternative: Download the ZVV app (check-in/check-out feature calculates correct fares automatically). Buy a 24-hour pass (CHF 9.20) if making 2+ trips, or the 9 O’Clock Day Pass (CHF 27) for day trips. Simple rule: NEVER buy single tickets if you’re sightseeing.
