Milan’s Bold Lunch Spot for Horse Tartare & Charcuterie

Pellegrini Horse Butcher Shop is a traditional butcher shop and casual lunch counter in Città Studi, Milan, focused on expertly prepared horse-meat specialties. Come here for a proper, no-fuss tasting vibe—warm hosts, friendly advice on how to cook your cuts, and the kind of counter service that feels refreshingly un-touristy.

Inside, the display case is the menu inspiration: silky horse tartare, delicate carpaccio, and cured favorites like bresaola-style slices and salami. If you’re curious, they’ll often guide you through a mini tasting, pairing bites with a glass of wine. Expect simple seating and a straightforward setup—the point is the quality, the cuts, and the flavors, not tablecloth theater.

Value is where Pellegrini really flexes. A satisfying lunch with meat, a side like potatoes, and a drink can land around 20€ total—exactly the kind of price-to-quality ratio that makes you wonder why you’d queue for overpriced sandwiches elsewhere. This is the kind of Milan restaurant experience locals actually repeat.

Insider tip: Go at lunchtime and ask for a mixed plate featuring tartare plus a few slices of cured meats—then take home their fennel sausage for dinner. If it’s your first time, ask how they’d cook the brisket cut. You’ll eat well and leave confident—do it.

What an amazing experience. Wanted to try something unique and unavailable in North America. Giorgio and his wife were spectacular hosts and treated us like Gold. I think he sensed our excitement and proceeded to arrange a tasting menu of all of his horse meat specialties from Bresola, salami, fresh fennel sausage, carpaccio (which was one of the best in my life) plus the standard horse tartar that he sells in the showcase. He picked out an amazing bottle of wine and we ate like kings on a little high top table just outside the doors. A meal and experience to remember
